Abstract
The article focuses on how state-run media in China frames transgender and gender nonconforming individuals, influencing societal perceptions and state governance regarding gender. Through a content analysis of 154 articles from state newspapers between 1980 and 2021, it identifies two primary narratives: one medicalizing gender nonconformity as a condition requiring intervention, and another attributing it to misguided socialization, particularly among youth. The findings reveal that state media constructs gender nonconformity as a "crisis" that necessitates regulation across various institutional domains, including criminal justice, medicine, and marriage, thereby reinforcing a cis-normative and heteronormative framework within state governance. This analysis highlights the role of state media in shaping discourse and policy surrounding gender nonconformity in China. [Extracted from the article]
