Abstract

Terrence Scott Kaufman, a renowned linguist, made significant contributions to various areas of historical linguistics, particularly in MesoAmerican linguistics. He conducted extensive fieldwork and documentation of numerous languages, with a focus on the classification and reconstruction of MesoAmerican language families, especially Mayan. Kaufman was known for his expertise in language contact, decipherment, linguistic prehistory, and pidgins and creoles. He co-founded and directed projects that trained linguists and documented Indigenous languages in Guatemala and Mexico. Kaufman's research encompassed a wide range of language families and language contact phenomena, and his work had a significant impact on the field of historical linguistics.
