Abstract
The article discusses the potential decline of the human rights era in U.S. foreign policy, which was significantly shaped by President Jimmy Carter's emphasis on moral considerations in international relations. It notes that while human rights became a central theme for subsequent administrations, the Trump administration has taken steps to diminish this focus, including the elimination of key positions and the reorganization of the State Department's human rights oversight. The article argues that despite the rhetoric surrounding human rights, U.S. foreign policy has often been selective and inconsistent, with military actions and immigration policies reflecting a complex legacy that complicates the notion of a unified human rights agenda. Ultimately, it suggests that the presidency's relationship with human rights may not have fundamentally changed under Trump, but rather reveals deeper issues within the historical commitment to human rights in U.S. policy.
