Abstract

The article focuses on Wes Martel, an Eastern Shoshone leader and U.S. Army veteran, who has significantly contributed to tribal sovereignty in natural resource management. His work on the Eastern Shoshone Business Council led to the development of essential programs in water, energy, and environmental protection, including the Wind River Tribal Water and Game Codes. Currently serving as the senior Wind River conservation associate for the Greater Yellowstone Coalition, Martel emphasizes the importance of reciprocity and sovereignty in environmental stewardship, advocating for a relationship with the land based on mutual care. The article also discusses broader themes of Indigenous peoples' rights and environmental law, highlighting challenges and innovative approaches to co-management and environmental justice within Indigenous communities.
