Abstract

This article focuses on the development and presentation of a culturally and linguistically tailored neuropsychological assessment battery for Portuguese-speaking Brazilian adults residing in the United States, addressing the growing need for appropriate cognitive evaluation within this demographic. It highlights the challenges posed by cultural perceptions of aging, language diversity, and limited availability of Brazilian-specific neuropsychological tools for U.S.-based practitioners, emphasizing the importance of using validated instruments and culturally informed practices. The proposed multidomain battery includes measures normed on Brazilian Portuguese speakers as well as supplemental tests adapted for use in the U.S., accompanied by normative data where available, and is illustrated through a case study demonstrating the benefits of assessment in the patient’s primary language. The article encourages neuropsychologists to understand the psychometric limitations of existing tools and to engage interpreters and cultural brokers thoughtfully to provide socially responsible care for this diverse population.
