Abstract

The article provides a comprehensive overview of 2022 scholarship on Early Middle English literature (c. 1050–1350), manuscripts, religious and secular prose and verse, drama, and related medieval English literary traditions. It highlights key studies on linguistic variation, manuscript culture, and textual transmission, including analyses of works such as Ancrene Wisse, Piers Plowman, Gower’s Confessio Amantis, and Hoccleve’s poetry, as well as investigations into devotional literature’s Continental influences and manuscript production practices. The review also addresses thematic concerns like travel, language contact, and emotional expression in medieval texts, alongside new editorial projects and interdisciplinary approaches incorporating palaeography, digital humanities, and performance studies. This synthesis serves as a valuable resource for researchers exploring the linguistic, cultural, and material dimensions of Early Middle English literature and its manuscript contexts.
