Abstract

This article examines the multifaceted roles of language teachers in a Danish language and integration programme for adult migrants, highlighting how their work extends beyond traditional language instruction. The teachers act as enforcers of integration laws, mediators between students and Danish authorities, and motivators balancing encouragement with realistic outlooks on refugees’ labour market prospects. Through ethnographic research, the study reveals the tensions teachers navigate between marginalizing and empowering students, managing emotional labor, and exercising discretionary power within a politicized integration system. The findings underscore the need for teacher training and institutional support that prepare language teachers for these complex roles in integration contexts.
