Abstract
This article analyzes the implications of integrating Hausa as an official language of the African Union (AU), focusing on its potential to enhance linguistic inclusivity, regional representation, and Pan-African unity. Hausa, spoken by over 70 million people primarily in West and Central Africa, serves as a lingua franca in trade, media, religion, and education but remains excluded from the AU’s official language roster, which currently prioritizes colonial languages and Swahili. The study highlights benefits such as improved democratic participation, cultural affirmation, and economic integration, while also addressing challenges including logistical costs, political sensitivities, and the need to balance Africa’s vast linguistic diversity. It recommends a phased, well-resourced approach with inclusive dialogue among member states to ensure sustainable implementation that supports the AU’s goals of decolonizing diplomacy and fostering equitable continental governance.
