Abstract
This article focuses on recent advances in second language (L2) fluency research, emphasizing interdisciplinary and multilingual perspectives. It presents a special issue comprising six studies that explore various factors influencing L2 fluency, including task demands, proficiency levels, cognitive and affective variables, and cross-linguistic and cross-modal fluency patterns. The research highlights the complexity of fluency as a continuum rather than a binary concept and introduces innovative methodologies such as eye-tracking and combined spoken and written fluency analyses. The studies involve diverse learner populations, including speakers of Arabic, Finnish, French, and Japanese, and underscore the importance of contextualizing fluency within authentic communicative settings and multilingual repertoires.
