Abstract
The article discusses the practices and challenges faced by the Stone Indians of the Great Plains regarding horse management and theft. It describes how the horses of a Trading House are cared for by a few men who use smoke to protect them from insects. An incident is recounted where three Stone Indians disrupted this care by attacking the horses with a wasp's nest, leading to the theft of five horses during the ensuing chaos. The article highlights the complex views on horse ownership among the Stone Indians, where stolen horses are often seen as common property despite being taken by individuals.
