Abstract

The article focuses on the importance of explicit sentence-level writing instruction for elementary students, particularly those with learning disabilities, and presents a framework that integrates writing skills development with content-area learning. It emphasizes that mastering sentence construction is foundational for writing proficiency and that teaching writing through content enhances both writing skills and subject knowledge. Six instructional activities targeting complete sentences, sentence types, and conjunctions are described, illustrating how teachers can embed brief, explicit writing lessons within English language arts blocks and apply these skills during content-area instruction such as social studies. The approach aims to improve students' writing fluency and engagement by combining direct instruction with meaningful, content-rich practice.
