Abstract

The main focus of this text is Ross Knecht's book *The Grammar Rules of Affection: Passion and Pedagogy in Sidney, Shakespeare, and Jonson*, which argues that emotions in Renaissance literature are depicted as rule-governed practices analogous to grammatical structures. Knecht applies Ludwig Wittgenstein's concept of language games to show how early modern writers represent passion through conventional linguistic frameworks, linking humanist pedagogy with literary expression. The book analyzes works by Philip Sidney, Shakespeare, and Ben Jonson, exploring how affect and language intersect within the context of sixteenth-century educational and social norms. This study contributes to scholarship on humanist pedagogy by combining historical, psychological, and formalist approaches, though it is more suited for specialized readers than for those seeking broad overviews.
