Abstract
This special issue focuses on the complex interplay between linguistic diversity, structural complexity, and instructed second language acquisition (ISLA). It addresses four main challenges: the dominance of Anglocentrism in ISLA research, debates on linguistic complexity, the distinction between structural complexity and learning difficulty, and the diverse linguistic and sociocultural profiles in multilingual classrooms. The contributions examine various languages—including German, Italian, Maltese, Portuguese, and Russian—and explore morphosyntactic complexity, pedagogical interventions, and multilingual learner contexts. The issue advocates for pluralistic, inclusive approaches that recognize diverse linguistic repertoires and support equitable language education in increasingly multilingual societies.
