Abstract

The article focuses on the Osage Nation's efforts to advance Tribal food sovereignty and improve food security amid high rates of chronic disease and food insecurity on their reservation. Since 2013, the Nation has developed Harvest Land Farm to provide healthy, tribally produced foods to community programs, but recognized that remote members faced barriers to access. In partnership with the Center for Indigenous Innovation and Health Equity (CIIHE), the Osage Nation conducted community-based participatory research to identify these barriers and launched a mobile market initiative in 2023 to deliver fresh produce and meats to underserved areas. The initiative integrates cultural education and is guided by the Osage Ribbon Work framework, which weaves Indigenous and Western agricultural practices to support food sovereignty. An evaluation plan centered on Osage values will assess the mobile market's impact on food access, consumption, and cultural knowledge transmission.
