Abstract

Four-year-old Bokgabo Poo from Wattville in Ekurhuleni, with her broad smile, was an outgoing, confident girl. While her mother, Tsholofelo, was at a community meeting on the afternoon of 10 October 2022, Bokgabo was playing in the park along with a five-year-old friend. Ntokozo Zikhali was well-known in the community as someone who was always around children and who had sweets and money in his school bag. He gave the boy with whom Bokgabo was playing R2 to buy lollipops at the local tuckshop. The boy agreed eagerly but when he returned with the lollipops, Bokgabo and the man were both gone. On 11 October 2022, the little girl's dismembered leg and arm were found in a shallow grave. A combination of eyewitness statements, CCTV footage and media accounts revealed the picture of her gruesome death. CCTV footage captured at a tavern showed the four-year-old girl approaching a shop with Ntokozo Zikhali close by. In the footage she is seen skipping happily alongside the man alleged to rape, murder and dismember her shortly thereafter. At the time, Zikhali was out on bail for the rape of a nine-year-old (Wolfson-Vorster, 2022). By February 2023, some of Bokgabo's body parts were still missing (Masilela, 2023). As with Tazné van Wyk (refer to our Crime Series this month), Bokgabo too was murdered by a man who was out on bail. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
