Abstract

A new analysis published in Science Advances reveals that in the counties where school shootings occur in the United States, donations to the National Rifle Association (NRA) increase significantly. The study, which examined 131 school shootings between 2000 and 2022, found that donations to the NRA's political action committee increased by an average of $970 per year in the affected counties for four years after a shooting. The number of individual donors also grew by up to 40% in these counties. The study did not find a similar increase in donations to gun control advocacy groups. The findings suggest that the occurrence of a school shooting in a county makes the threat of gun control more real to its residents, leading to increased support for the NRA.
