Abstract
Statutory change in 1868 moved the places of execution on judicial warrant of a convicted person from an open venue to a closed prison room. The execution of Joseph Bell, one of the last such spectacles before a crowd, illustrates the demands made of local authority administration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
