Abstract
The article focuses on the 2024 Russian film adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel *The Master and Margarita*, directed by Russian American filmmaker Michael Lockshin. Despite the novel’s sharp critique of authoritarianism and censorship in Soviet Russia, the $17 million production—partly state-funded—was released amid political tensions following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, becoming a major box office success and winning critical acclaim in Russia. The film’s complex narrative intertwines the story of a persecuted writer and a fantastical visit by Satan to 1930s Moscow, reflecting themes of artistic freedom under oppressive regimes. The adaptation’s release sparked controversy within Russia and remains unlikely to be shown in Ukraine or the United States due to political and legal disputes, highlighting ongoing cultural and ideological conflicts surrounding Bulgakov’s legacy.
