Abstract

Two federal judges in New York and Texas have temporarily blocked the Trump administration's attempts to deport alleged Venezuelan gang members under a two-century-old wartime law. The judges ruled that detainees must be given notice and an opportunity to challenge their deportations before being flown out of the country. The cases were filed by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of detainees seeking to contest their gang membership and challenge the president's use of the Alien Enemies Act. The Supreme Court has intervened in related cases, requiring detainees to file habeas corpus cases in courts where they are held. [Extracted from the article]
