Abstract
The article focuses on the status and controversy surrounding federal executions in the United States during the transition from the Trump to Biden administrations. Under President Donald Trump, 13 federal executions were carried out—the most in over a century—while President Joe Biden halted federal executions upon taking office. Biden faces increasing pressure from diverse groups, including religious leaders, civil rights advocates, and lawmakers, to commute the death sentences of all 40 men currently on federal death row. Although Biden previously supported the death penalty, his 2020 presidential campaign included a promise to abolish it federally, and his administration has since paused executions. The article also highlights concerns that Trump intends to resume and expand federal executions if re-elected.
