Abstract

This article focuses on a study examining suicidal ideation, planning, and attempts among Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) cadets at the start of their Cadet Training Program (CTP). The research, conducted by the University of Regina and supported by the Medavie Foundation and RCMP, found that within one month of starting the CTP, 1.6% of cadets reported past-month suicidal ideation, with no reported planning or attempts, and 1.5% reported lifetime suicide attempts. These prevalence rates were lower than those observed in the general population and serving RCMP members, suggesting that increased suicidal behaviors among serving officers may be linked to cumulative occupational stressors rather than initial screening deficiencies. The study utilized the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview administered by mental health professionals to assess these outcomes.
