Abstract
The article discusses the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, particularly in the northern states. Governors from the north have expressed concerns about the worsening insecurity and have called for measures to address criminal activities. One governor even suggested allowing civilians to carry weapons for self-defense. Kidnappings have been on the rise in the country, with September recording the highest number of incidents. The Nigerian military has been conducting operations against militants and kidnapping gangs, resulting in the killing of gunmen, the arrest of armed criminals, and the rescue of hostages. However, Boko Haram militants are reportedly regrouping and retaking up arms in certain areas. Various states have also experienced attacks and abductions by criminal groups. Amnesty International has called for the release of protesters who were arrested during rallies against police brutality in 2020, citing a resurgence of the problem. A court in Enugu state ruled the 2017 proscription of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as unlawful and ordered the government to pay damages to IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu.
