Abstract
The article focuses on three distinct books that explore themes of Indigenous history and culture in British Columbia. The first book discusses the legend of Slumach's gold, highlighting the inclusion of a curse in the latest edition and the ongoing impact of colonial narratives on Indigenous territories. The second book, "Douglas Lake Ranch: Empire of Grass," chronicles the history of Canada's largest cattle ranch while notably omitting significant engagement with the Syilx (Okanagan) people, raising concerns about the erasure of Indigenous perspectives in settler narratives. The third book, "Skidegate House Models: From Haida Gwaii to the Chicago World’s Fair and Beyond," examines a miniature model of a Haida village created for the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, emphasizing its role in cultural resistance and the reinterpretation of Haida history. Each book contributes to the broader discourse on Indigenous representation and the complexities of colonial histories in the region. [Extracted from the article]
