Abstract

A Columbia University graduate student, Mahmoud Khalil, faced deportation due to his anti-Israel activism after being arrested without a warrant by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. Despite his attorneys' efforts to have him released, an immigration judge in Louisiana ruled that Khalil's removal proceedings should continue as the Department of Homeland Security proved he was removable as charged. Khalil, who became a lawful permanent resident in 2024, remains in a detention facility in Louisiana awaiting an in-person hearing scheduled for May 22. [Extracted from the article]
