Abstract

This article focuses on identifying and summarizing significant published literature from 2023 related to the medication-use process (MUP), which comprises prescribing/transcribing, dispensing, administration, and monitoring steps essential for safe medication utilization in health-system pharmacy. Using a comprehensive PubMed and journal table-of-contents search augmented by machine learning, 40 practice-enhancing articles were selected and categorized by MUP step, with a notable increase in publications addressing dispensing, particularly involving automation and technology. The review highlights trends such as pharmacy technician role expansion, technology integration, clinical decision support, and emerging applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence across the MUP. This synthesis aims to assist health-system pharmacists in incorporating evidence-based improvements to optimize medication safety, efficiency, and patient care within healthcare institutions.
