Abstract
The article discusses legislative proposals in Arkansas and New Jersey that aimed to weaken state sunshine laws, limiting public access to government information. In Arkansas, proposed changes faced opposition from transparency advocates, journalists, and the public, who argued that they would reduce accountability and transparency in government. Ultimately, the proposed changes in Arkansas did not pass, but concerns about potential erosion of transparency laws were raised. In 2023, Arkansas enacted a compromise bill, Senate Bill 10, which broadened exemptions for high-ranking officials' security and established a Government Transparency Commission. Arkansas Citizens for Transparency attempted to enhance government transparency through a constitutional amendment but did not collect enough signatures for the 2024 ballot, planning to continue efforts for the 2026 ballot.
