Abstract
The article focuses on recent human rights concerns in South Sudan, highlighting a rise in abductions and extrajudicial executions. The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) reported increased abductions in the greater Yei region, mainly attributed to the National Salvation Front (NAS) and other armed groups, affecting over 130 people including children. UNMISS called for the immediate release of captives and urged the government to investigate and prevent further incidents. Concurrently, the UN human rights office (OHCHR) expressed alarm over 76 extrajudicial executions by firing squads between January 2023 and June 2024, with a significant increase in 2024, and called for a moratorium on the death penalty and accountability for perpetrators.
