How to Intervene When You Witness Workplace Aggression.

Abstract

Workplace aggression is a significant issue for organizations, with an annual cost of up to $1.97 trillion. Bystander intervention, where witnesses of aggression are trained to intervene, is becoming increasingly popular. However, intervening is not always straightforward, and the way bystanders intervene can have consequences for both the target and the bystander. It is important to approach interventions thoughtfully, considering factors such as timing, confrontational vs. nonconfrontational approaches, and the relationship with the perpetrator. Power dynamics and organizational norms also play a role in intervention outcomes. Implementing strategies that consider the individual at the center of the issue can lead to more successful interventions and create environments conducive to growth and collaboration.
