Abstract
Peru has released former President Alberto Fujimori from jail, defying a decision by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) that he should remain imprisoned. The IACHR's decision was reiterated on Tuesday evening, but Peru's top court ordered Fujimori's immediate release. Fujimori, a polarizing figure in Peru, was sentenced for human rights violations, including the use of death squads, in 2009. This move by Peru challenges the authority of the IACHR and aligns the country with Nicaragua and Venezuela as countries that have defied international law. [Extracted from the article]
