Abstract

Rwanda's President Paul Kagame criticized the international community for failing his country during the 1994 genocide, which claimed the lives of 800,000 people. He spoke at a ceremony commemorating the massacre, attended by African heads of state and former US president Bill Clinton. The international community's failure to intervene has been a source of shame, with the African Union chief acknowledging that no one can exonerate themselves from their inaction. French President Emmanuel Macron released a video message expressing regret but stopped short of an official apology. The repercussions of the genocide are still felt in Rwanda and around the world.
