Abstract

The article focuses on the unique phenomenon of Italian emigrants returning to Italy to fight in World War I following the country's entry into the conflict in 1915. Over 300,000 Italian emigrants, primarily from the Americas and Europe, mobilized to join the Italian army, constituting 7.2% of its fighting force. Despite their legal obligation to serve, many emigrants faced challenges integrating into the military and were often met with indifference or hostility upon their return, leading to feelings of disillusionment and regret about their decision to fight for Italy. The experiences of these soldiers highlight the complexities of national identity and the often unrecognized sacrifices made by emigrants during the war. [Extracted from the article]
