Abstract

This article focuses on the evaluation of a 2021 Washington State law requiring substance use disorder (SUD) training for new law enforcement officers. The study assessed recruits at the Washington State Basic Law Enforcement Academy using pre- and post-training surveys based on the Drug and Drug Problem Perceptions Questionnaire. Results showed that recruits who received the new SUD training demonstrated significant increases in knowledge about alcohol and drugs and professional self-esteem in working with individuals with SUD, while those without the training showed little to no change. The findings indicate that the mandated SUD training effectively provides evidence-based information and enhances officers’ confidence in interacting with people affected by substance use disorder.
