Abstract

The article focuses on the intersection of speculative fabulation and documentary discourse in contemporary essay films, particularly examining Filipa César and Louis Henderson's *Sunstone* (2018) and Theo Anthony's *All Light, Everywhere* (2021). It discusses how these films utilize various visual technologies and historical contexts to critique the epistemological and sociopolitical implications of vision machines, such as lighthouses and body cameras. By blending storytelling with scientific inquiry, both films explore the historical entanglements of optics, power, and representation, ultimately revealing the biases inherent in visual technologies and their role in shaping contemporary culture. The analysis highlights the innovative use of speculative fabulation as a means to reflect on the past and present visual regimes. [Extracted from the article]
