Abstract
The article reports on China’s announcement of suspended death sentences with two-year reprieves for former defense ministers Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu, both convicted of graft by a military court. Wei served as defense minister from 2018 to 2023, while Li succeeded him but was removed after seven months; both will serve life imprisonment without parole. These are the first such rulings since Chinese leader Xi Jinping initiated a broad military anti-corruption campaign in 2023, which has also led to the removal of other high-ranking military officials. The exact amounts involved in the bribery cases have not been disclosed. [Extracted from the article]
