Abstract
From the late 1940s on, as he shows, policymakers in the United States and other nuclear nations dangled the carrot of peaceful atomic energy over recently occupied and formerly colonized states. As U.S. government officials sought out new sources of uranium and other raw materials to fuel their nation's rapidly expanding nuclear weapons arsenal, they began to promote the promises of civilian nuclear technology to countries that possessed those resources. While analyzing the bilateral and multilateral relations between the United States and many other countries, Hamblin also deftly weaves the history of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) into his narrative.
