Abstract

The Reid Technique is an interrogation strategy that has been used by law enforcement throughout the United States since 1974. John Reid, a retired police officer and polygraph expert, developed this technique in the 1940's. While still controversial today, The Reid Technique is the most commonly utilized interrogation strategy by police. This paper examines the compliance gaining tactics that police use through the Reid Technique and asks the question of whether this technique is used at times to get false confessions out of suspects. This research identifies the need for care to be taken when employing strategies of compliance gaining in the Reid Technique to avoid prompting false confessions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
