Abstract
The article evaluates a 120-hour Response to Resistance and Aggression training implemented by the Saint Paul Police Department, designed to reduce the severity of police use of force by integrating leverage-based control and de-escalation techniques. Using machine learning models, the study found that the training decreased reliance on pain-compliance methods and was associated with a 3.3 percentage point reduction in officer injuries and a 1.3 percentage point reduction in significant injuries to subjects. This research addresses a gap in existing studies by focusing on the actual impact of use of force training in the field rather than officer perceptions. The findings contribute to understanding effective police training programs aimed at mitigating harm during encounters.
