Abstract

"Visualizing genocide: Indigenous interventions in art, archives, and museums" is an edited volume that critiques the exclusion of Indigenous perspectives in memory-making and retellings of atrocities committed against Indigenous communities during European imperialism and conquest. The book offers alternative perspectives and interventions that challenge the colonial logic and emphasize the ongoing repercussions of violence in the present. Divided into three parts, the book explores case studies on visual forms of misrepresentation and amnesia, discusses the power of archives and the need for counterarchiving, and examines avenues for physical participation and intervention in narrative-making. Overall, the book provides a valuable contribution to visual memory studies and offers a political critique of ongoing marginalization. [Extracted from the article]
