Abstract

The article discusses the legal framework surrounding extradition in Suriname, highlighting its absolute prohibition against extraditing nationals, as established by the Decree on Extradition of the Republic of Suriname. This prohibition has prevented Suriname from signing the 2017 Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Arrest Warrant Treaty and positions Suriname as one of the few countries in the Americas, alongside Panama, with such a strict stance on extradition. The article also contrasts Suriname's approach with that of other countries like Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Haiti, which have varying degrees of extradition policies for their citizens. Additionally, it outlines the recent opening for signature of the Third Additional Protocol to the European Convention on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters, aimed at modernizing mutual assistance procedures among member states.
