Abstract
The article focuses on recent efforts in the U.S. House of Representatives to censure multiple lawmakers, a formal reprimand historically rare but increasingly common in recent years. This week, Illinois Democrat Rep. Jesus "Chuy" Garcia was successfully censured over the timing of his retirement announcement, while censure attempts against Democratic Del. Stacey Plaskett of the U.S. Virgin Islands and Republican Rep. Cory Mills of Florida failed. Censures require only a simple majority vote and do not remove members from office but can lead to additional penalties. In response to the surge in censure efforts, bipartisan proposals have emerged to reform the process by raising the voting threshold to 60%, aiming to make censures less frequent and more bipartisan.
