Abstract

This article investigates the social representations of citizenship among Argentine adolescents aged 16 to 18, focusing on how they understand and experience citizenship beyond formal rights and responsibilities. Using semi-structured interviews guided by the Piagetian clinical method, the study identifies four main categories in adolescents' conceptualizations of citizenship: civic engagement (community involvement and social commitment), rights (primarily first- and second-generation civil, political, economic, and social rights), nationality (a sense of belonging to a shared cultural and political community), and voting (viewed as the key mechanism of political participation). The findings highlight a plurality of meanings attributed to citizenship within this group and suggest the need for further research into how these representations develop and are expressed in everyday practices.
