Abstract

The article focuses on a recent Supreme Court ruling that struck down a Louisiana congressional map for racial gerrymandering, undermining a key provision of the Voting Rights Act. The court ruled 6-3 that the replacement map, drawn after a previous map was challenged for concentrating Black voters in one district, violated the Constitution’s equal-protection clause by sorting voters based on race. This decision is expected to accelerate partisan redistricting efforts, particularly in Republican-led states, ahead of upcoming midterm elections. The article also briefly notes other current events, including a new men's marathon world record, the United Arab Emirates' exit from OPEC, the closure of Spirit Airlines, and evacuations near the Mayon volcano in the Philippines.
