Abstract

The article focuses on the dramatic reduction of opium poppy cultivation in Afghanistan under the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA), with satellite data showing a 99% decrease in Helmand Province and similar declines nationwide during the 2022–2023 crop year following a 2022 ban issued by Supreme Leader Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada. Despite Western criticism and concerns about economic hardship for farmers, the ban has led to a near-elimination of opium production, a major source of heroin for Europe. Concurrently, Afghanistan faces a severe food crisis exacerbated by Western sanctions, reduced international aid, and a locust infestation threatening wheat harvests, while neighboring countries and China have expressed support for humanitarian assistance and economic reconstruction. The article highlights tensions between Western narratives and the Afghan government's efforts to curb narcotics and address food insecurity amid ongoing geopolitical challenges.
