Abstract
The article focuses on a neuropsychological case study of a 51-year-old woman involved in both victimization through a romance scam and subsequent participation in an international financial fraud scheme targeting older adults. Neuropsychological evaluation revealed mild to moderate cognitive impairments linked to long-term alcohol and benzodiazepine abuse, alongside maladaptive personality traits with dependent and borderline features. These psychological and neurocognitive factors contributed to her vulnerability and manipulation by an online romantic partner who acted as a handler. Despite no direct financial gain, she became a “middle-man” in the fraud due to her cognitive deficits and interpersonal dependencies. The case highlights the role of neuropsychological mitigation in legal contexts, leading to referral for mental health diversion and substance abuse treatment.
