Abstract
The article responds to a comment on the measurement of unmet need for contraception, emphasizing the limitations of existing survey methods and the need for new, person-centered approaches to family planning measurement. The authors advocate for qualitative and longitudinal approaches to better understand contraceptive desires and highlight the complexity of supply and demand factors in decision-making processes. They argue against using contraceptive uptake as a proxy for demand, stressing the importance of listening to women's voices in family planning research and programs. The authors call for a radical new measurement agenda centered around reproductive justice and the prioritization of people's own assessments of their contraceptive needs and autonomy.
