Abstract
The article focuses on the British Geriatric Society's (BGS) current opposition to the legalisation of Assisted Dying (AD) in the UK and Crown Dependencies. The BGS cites concerns about the existing under-resourced health and social care context for older people with complex needs, doubts about the effectiveness of safeguards to protect vulnerable individuals, and the potential for indirect pressures influencing decisions toward AD. While acknowledging a diversity of opinions among its members, including some support for legalisation, the BGS emphasizes the need for improved personalised, multidisciplinary end-of-life care and recommends that any future legislation include a conscience clause for healthcare professionals who object to participation in AD. The Society advocates caution and ongoing review should legal frameworks change.
