Abstract

This article reviews *Canada to Ireland: Poetry, Politics, and the Shaping of Canadian Nationalism 1788–1900*, a scholarly study examining the influence of Irish-Canadian relations on the development of Canadian cultural nationalism in the nineteenth century. The book analyzes key Irish and Irish-Canadian literary and political figures, such as Thomas D'Arcy McGee and Adam Kidd, situating their works within the socio-political contexts of both Ireland and Canada. It highlights the shaping role of Irish political movements like the United Irishmen and Young Ireland in fostering Canadian values of non-violence and inclusiveness, while also addressing less successful episodes such as the Fenian Brotherhood’s incursions. The study is noted for its rigorous research and comprehensive contextualization, though it includes a critical observation regarding the treatment of Indigenous subjects from a contemporary perspective.
