Abstract

The article focuses on the arrest of Zambian opposition politician Fred M'membe by police on August 8th for "seditious practices" related to a social media post alleging that the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) leader paid Zambia's president millions of dollars to suppress criticism. M'membe, a journalist and leader of the Socialist Party, faces charges after sharing an article titled "President Felix Tshisekedi tells DRC Catholic Bishops about the US$20m payout to buy Zambia's silence." The report also notes the recent arrest of journalist Thomas Zgambo on similar charges and highlights Zambia's increased detentions of former ruling party members and dissidents, including former first lady Esther Lungu. Additionally, police announced a reward for information leading to the arrest of lawmaker Jay Emmanuel Banda, who reportedly escaped custody.
