Abstract

The article focuses on the complexities of gun violence prevention in the United States, emphasizing the impact of structural racism and the need for a multi-institutional approach to address the issue. Drawing on seven years of ethnographic research, it highlights how dominant narratives often overlook the experiences of marginalized communities, particularly Black and Brown individuals, who are disproportionately affected by community gun violence. The author distinguishes between "gun control," which emphasizes regulation, and "gun violence prevention," which seeks to address root causes and support community-based interventions. The article concludes with a call for comprehensive policy changes that tackle systemic inequities, alongside support for intervention organizations that work directly within affected communities.
