Abstract

This article focuses on the legal developments in the case of Luigi Mangione, accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in 2024. A federal judge dismissed two serious charges against Mangione, including one that would have made him eligible for the death penalty, effectively removing capital punishment as a possible sentence in the federal case. Mangione still faces multiple federal stalking charges carrying life sentences, as well as state charges in New York and Pennsylvania, including second-degree murder and firearm offenses. Jury selection for the federal trial is scheduled for September 8, 2025, with opening statements set for October 13, while state trial dates remain pending.
